I have traced ancestry back to an Anders Palack that lived in Grinstad during the 1700s( also spelled paalak, palaack, and palak in different records). I was just wondering if anyone was familiar with this surname and if it had any particular meaning. It does not seem to fit the standard patronymical system and I am looking for any clues to possibly find his place of birth or parents. Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi!

It would help if you could give us some information about where we can find him in the household examination book, so we can take a look at him. Perhaps Palack can be a name for a Soldier or a Finnish name, but I am not sure.

Regards
Klas

Yes, what I have been able to find so far is that he was married to a Kerstin or Kjerstin Parsdotter in 1781 in Bolstad.  They had four children (that I know of) between 1783 and 1795, all christened in Grinstad. My family line runs through Olof Andersson born in 1795. There was also a burial record that showed a birth year of 1726 and burial date of 22 June 1800 for Älvsborg, that I believe is the same person.

Thanks,

Jake

Yes he can be found  in what is called "Finntorpet". Perhaps he came from Finland? I googled the name Pållack and found some people in Finland during the 18 th Century with that name. But Christina Johansson writes abow that he was a Soldier so perhaps he was not originally from Finland? Perhaps you should ask more questions about him under the name Pållack or under the Parish Grinstad, and see if there are som people there who know more about it. He seems to have been married Before because he had some Children when he married Kerstin. Kerstin is noted in the household examination (Grinstad A I/10 sid 61) to have died in 1804.

I had a look at the Millitary records and found him in Generalmönsterrullorna for Västgöta-Dals regemente, 1775-1785, page 207, in Soldier croft nr 56 and he was not from Finland he was a "local boy". He was called Anders Larsson Pållack and was 5 foot 10 long, which in Sweden during that time was approx as much as 5 foot 8 in USA today. He was noted as born in Dahl (Dalsland), married, 47 years old (in 1778) and 20 years as a Soldier (in 1778). Bare in minde that the millitary records often are wrong when it comes to the age of the Soldier. I Think that "born  in 1726" in the household examination is more reliable than 47 year in 1778. It is likely that he participated in Swedens war in Northern Germany during the 1760's, the so called 7 years war (1756-1763).

I have looked some more in the Millitary records and I found out that Anders Larsson became a Soldier in August 30 1758 after the corporal Per Pållack had died in Pommern Germany earlier that Spring (SE/KrA/0023/0/570 Västgöta-Dals Regemente 1767 Picture 161 page 285 (SVAR)). At the Regements inspection 1785 (SE/KrA/0023/0/571 Picture 431)  he is noted as "Bräcklig och svag och får avsked/ Fragile and weak and he is discharged". You didn't have to do anything wrong to get discharged just be to old or sick to continue to be a soldirer. As for the name Pållack/Pålack/Pollack. Polack today in Sweden means  a person from Poland but because he was a Soldier he could have that name even though he was born in Dalsland Sweden. The name Pållack in Grinstad was connected to the croft, not a family.

If I have the time later today I can take a look in the marriage records and see if I can find his first marriage and see were he came from. Or perhaps you have access to them yourself?

Regards Klas
