Hello.

I'm posting another query about a relative where I have found good records but some questions remain.

Samuel Andersson is father of Jonas Samuelsson.  Jonas Samulesson is father of Anders Jonasson, who I posted about earlier.

The records I have show a birth date of 1765, but i haven't been able to find a better date or birth record.

I also believe i have located his parents and spouse.  i will post separate queries about them with the records i have.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Tom

Hi Tom,
To follow Samuel backwards I just had a quick look at the wedding record for him and Kierstin Pärsdotter, and there was something with parts hard to read abouthim coming from Präst/Priest but I havent had time to locate that particular page at around 1790.

Instead I concentrated on follow them both in just one step further back to her family since it was quite clear in the wedding record where she came from.

I also had a look at their death records, and comment them below. They didn't add much more than cause of death, but to often to ignore these records the provide vital information.

This contract was bound to ownership of the farm as long as either of the couple lived.

During 1785-1794 in Häggenäs Roten, Esspelund, you find the family but most of the info is related to church matters, the columns:
”Kan i bok” = can read ( my comment: but oftenmost they could not write).
”Luth:Cath; understands the Cathecism.
”Spörmål” = old word for ”questions to ponder in” in this case Luth: Cath:
”Commun:” = Attended or The Lords Holy Communions as it is usually said. And usually there is a column for each year and what date the person parcipitated, But here The first sub column ”1785” contains the age of the person .The main column their says ”Ålder” = Age.
”Annotationer” = notes
See more below:
Pär Olsson x, x , , 1 , 40   the 1 may actually be a J for ”Ja”= Yes
dess/dennes Håstrü = his Wife but no name , ,x, , 1, 40
Sonen Nils x,x,,,15 = the son
do Olåf 8 = Dito/the same
Dott: Kierstin x,x,x, 1, 17  gift=married overstrike she is mentioned on some rows below as Hustru/Wife *2
do Maria x,,,,11

*2 Kjerstin is mentioned as being 17 in 1785 which would be a birtdate in 1768! Later on as a wife in 1793 both she and Samuel A are 27 or born 1766. Clerical misstakes...

Some of the words/names are embellied/beautified or so, they did it in this way quite often – especially earlier on, In these cases I have used the transcribe letter by letter.

Pär O’s wife not being named is not the standard, but perhaps was used in this parish. Compare with other household/Families. Perhaps she is menined in the previous HFL.

It is an intresting place the farm Espelund, you can see that there is a ”Inhys” fully written as ”Inhyses”, a family of several persons on the same farm. They would probably be a very poor and/or ill family living by the socal network that the parish had, provided by the parish but living on the farm. It may indicate that the farm was quite big.

The most interesting thing is that Pär Olsson is also overstricken and so are some of her sisters and brothers! This means that they either had died or moved from home or changed status, but I do not find her father Pär O. below on the page. So, Samuel and Kierstin took over the farm. If some of her siblings still lived they had to be bought out for their heritage.

I haven’t had had enought time to go into details, got an emergency situation right after lunch.

That is all for today, having a meeting with the researchers of the Local Historians and Genealogs of the parish where I live now, tonight.

Greetings,

Ingemar Skarpås

Hi Ulla.

thanks for your insights.

You list a birth date for Kerstin as 25 September 1766.

But I don't see a Kerstin on that 1766 date in the Ryssby book.  I do see a birth date for a Kerstin on 17 September 1766.

I did include 2 possible birth date records in my inquiry.  One is for 15 September 1765.  Was this the record you are referring to?

The other record, on the previous page, shows a Kerstin with a birth date of 14 August 1765.  Is there a reason that this can be excluded?

Tom

Hello Tom

I have been looking again in the records  In Rysstad book births C:4 1765-1819 p 9 there is a Kerstin who might be the right one.  When there is so many places of the birth of Samuel I think it would need moore searching before you decied  who is the right one.  When I went to learn to do genealogysaid the teacher if there is nothing written in the place  of the place where people was born you can first check in the books of the parrish you found him/her,

Kerstin Persdotter died in 11 of July 1840 in Ryssby /Espelund of some chest problem. Samuel Andersson died 25 of april 1847 in Ryssby.Espelund Record of death Ryssby E1:1 1764-1844 page 453 and death record Ryssby E1:1 1764-1844 page 453 and 481

Hello Tom,

I have attached a small file Samuel_Andersson.png. The picture shows the line of his marriage to Kierstin. Getting this line correctly transcribed is essential to anything doing with Samuel, and getting anything about him certain.

Ryssby parish at the times we are talking about 1790~1810 and I have seen as immediately relevant - is one of the most oddest ways of parish records I have seen: like wifes name not mentioned at all times in HFLs. Years of age instead of year of birth (and more or less actual date). We cant do anything about that - but the need for accuracy is even more so...

I have spent quite a lot of time just with that particular line... The Xx:es are uncertain parts. I have tried to match some things to placenames, reviewing easier to read books from mid 1800-dreds of the parish, and applying to each of the letters in the words, and even reading more parts of the years around 1790 to find out possible variations of letters in those days applicable to this particular parish. This is the standard method for learning the writings for a certain parish at a certain time. As soon as one gets into trouble with letters and words, I recommend that You make tables of recognizable letters and all variations of them, upper case and lower case. Sometimes you can even find that there are at least two different persons that have written the records.

Well:" d 11 wigdes dxxxx Samüel Anderßon i Xxxx xxxx, X. Kierstin Pärs dr I. i Eßpelünd."
Comments.
A) the letter "i" in "wigdes" has the dot from just under "wigdes on the line above". The placing of dots and ~ (incl. ) double-dots, and rings over å are commonly misplaced. Sometimes even used as making the text more beautiful?!
B) dxxxxx maybe a misspelled "dreng" or refering to "dennes" = "of this month"
C) the letter u i Samuel belongs with a "~".
D) the Xxxx xxxx (possibly two words or just one) first letter kan be variations of      K, B,  N, P, second letter either belonging to a K, or being an r. Third letter        either of letters aåäö. 4th letter f? then an s and e, last letter r or s.
Second part ox Xxxx xxxx may be  "slät" slåt" "ståd"/stad.
a wild initial guest was that it was related to Präst, but found nothing relevant       going through the relevant HFL.
E) X perhaps a "D." for daugther
F) "I" or "1" no similar findings in the weddings at the time to explain meaning. Thought of 1 for first daughter but nothing to substansiate that.

Since everything around this time in Ryssby I have begun thinking of a neccesity of contacting the genealogists of Ryssby direct - I think that they might have transcribed a lot and even has village and even by farm history, that you Tom can buy. The only thing to do then is to verify their findings in the records - one should never assume that they got everything correct.

Possibly I will have a look at Kierstins birth records and try to find anything related to her mother and mother's and father's wedding. There are just a few relevant years in the parish, but ... she could be from another parish and oftenmost, since the whole wedding was payed for by the womans father/parents, the wedding was held at their place and recorded in that parish...

Have a nice Weekend!

Ingemar

Tom, Oh I am so sorry, I sent the whole part instead of jut that line.

Also, I now saw that Västerslätt in another parish was involved, in the marriage record of Samuel & Kierstin.

I am going throught details of things and the birth of their son Jonas in 1809. I don't know if you have that transcribed already but this shows a lot more of the family.

"[number in order of that year] 28. [firstname] Jonas [birth day of month] 26 [dito christening] 29 [probably the age of the mother] 42 []
Son af Åldermannen Samuel Andersson och H.
Kirstin Pärs dottr i Espelund. Faddraß. Nils PärsSon
och dr. Sven PärsSon: H. Lisa Larsdotter, samt Pig An-
nika Nils dottr; alla från Espelund.!

Ålderman is a titel with several meanings, but probably someting in the parish, in judical meaning for the judge and the layman judges "nämndeman/män" it was about the longest serving, not the oldest person.
Kierstin is here just spelled in another way.
Faddraß or Faddras looks like short forms of faddrar. In different parts of Sweden some used gudmor/gudfar, especially in earlier days, responsibel for the christian upbringing. Later on faddrar is used as more of a social responsibility and a possible responsibility for an orphan living in with the faddrar.

In the tax record for Carl Nilsson, then Samuel is mentioned as "Son Samuel". You said step-son, and it may very well be so, that his is the wife´s son in a previous marriage. Swedish "bouppteckningar" probate records will mention such things and tose probates were a legal must for everybody after around 1775. In some part of Sweden Riksarkivet in the Landsarkiv have them scanned also by AD?. They are a real treasury of information, and if not scanned can be ordered for just the cost of copy if provided with necessary data when asking for the info. Places of birth and other siblings in other marriages with names missing elsewhere are best found there, because they were investigated a lot more by letters from priest to priest between parishes, and final decisions were taken in local court. Sometimes in local court "Ting" or several parishes common "Häradsrätt".

Maybe you have this info already, but if you look at the household exam roll and Espelund you see that Samuel Andersson's wife Kerstin was most likely the daughter of Per Olsson/Olofsson and his wife that lived there:
Ryssby (H) AI:2 (1785-1794) Bild 9 / sid 2 (AID: v23910.b9.s2, NAD: SE/VALA/00312)

The daughter is crossed-over as married and a few lines below you have Samuel Andersson and wife.

There is a Kerstin born September 25th 1765 in Espelund, with parents Per Olofsson and Gunilla Jonsdotter:
Ryssby (H) C:4 (1765-1819) Bild 8 / sid 9 (AID: v47050.b8.s9, NAD: SE/VALA/00312)

If you then go some years later Kerstin's birth date is listed as September 25th 1765:
Ryssby (H) AI:5 (1810-1817) Bild 162 / sid 151 (AID: v23913.b162.s151, NAD: SE/VALA/00312)

Still living in Espelund.

There was an estate inventory made after Per Olofsson from Espelund which made April 10th 1790. His daughter Kerstin is listed as not being married at that time. Per Olofsson died January 16th according to this record:
Norra Möre häradsrätt (H) FII:3 (1790-1794) Bild 100 / sid 185 (AID: v78427.b100.s185, NAD: SE/VALA/01566)

I also find an estate inventory after Per Olofsson wife Gunilla/Gunnel Jonsdotter from Espelund made February 2nd 1795. She had died January 23rd. It is noted that the daughter Kerstin was present with her husband Samuel Andersson:
Norra Möre häradsrätt (H) FII:4 (1795-1797) Bild 186 / sid 341 (AID: v78428.b186.s341, NAD: SE/VALA/01566)

Samuel Andersson and Kerstin Persdotter married in 1790. She was from Espelund:
Ryssby (H) EI:1 (1764-1844) Bild 17 / sid 27 (AID: v41028.b17.s27, NAD: SE/VALA/00312)

There was an estate inventory made after Carl Nilsson and his wife Lena Jonsdotter from Västerslät in Kläckeberga June 12th 1805:
Norra Möre häradsrätt (H) FII:9 (1805-1806) Bild 423 / sid 783 (AID: v78433.b423.s783, NAD: SE/VALA/01566)

Lena's two children inherits her, Samuel Anderson in Espelund and Kerstin Andersdotter (married to Per Andersson).

Not sure if you have Samuel Andersson's estate inventory?
Norra Möre häradsrätt (H) FII:35 (1846-1847) Bild 589 / sid 1171 (AID: v78459.b589.s1171, NAD: SE/VALA/01566)

He died in Espelund April 25th. Lists three children, and it says that Anders Peter, 56 years old, is a sailor and has been living abroad for over 30 years. Jonas Samuelsson in Ref and Cajsa Samuelsdotter (widow) were present.

Note that the place for Jonas Samuelsson matches the household exam:

Hello Kristina.

You have been very helpful in sorting out some of my questions.  Thank you.

I have posted a few other inquiries about family members as well.

I wanted you to know, in case you find time to do any further research, that I will be out of the country on a trip until after the first week of May.  I leave in a few days, on Tuesday.

So I may not be able to respond to any postings in that time.

But I will be looking forward to any further insights you may have.

Regards,

Tom

Hello Tom, the Samuel Andersson you found born 10 Mar 1767 in Åby with parents Anders Nilsson and Lena Jönsdotter actually may be the correct birth record for your ancestor.

Here is this family in Åby By, Åby between 1771-1777.  The last entry for this family before being crossed out is in 1777 suggesting that they moved somewhere else either in 1777 or 1778 and were no longer living there in 1778 when your Anders Nilsson died in Kläckeberga.

A daughter was born later that year in Kläckeberga whose father was named Per Andersson.  Witnesses at the baptism included Samuel Andersson and his wife from Aspelund (variant spelling for Espelund).

Hi Carl.

Thank you for looking into these records.

Some other members, Ingemar Skarpås, Kristina Rylander and Ulla Lundell, have also been looking into these records.  They might look at your comments to see if they also agree with your observations.

I will be out of the country until after the first week of May, leaving this coming Tuesday.  So I may not be able to reply to any posts during this time.

regards,

Tom
