Have looked long and hard in the Swedish Emigrant CD to no avail. John (Johan, Jön, Johannes, etc) Person was most probably born in February 1870 and emigrated in 1892. Per his Town of Swiss, Burnett County, Wisconsin, USA, January 1905 marriage record, his parents were Perry Erickson and Marthey Nelson (Per Eriksson and Martha/Marta/Mathilda Nilsdotter). And now have had help with the 1890 census...Again with no good results.  I am thinking maybe 1880 is a better chance for John E. Person.

Thank you.

Hello Gary,

So who was this John? Is he related to you? Can you get hold of his death cert. in order to determine his dob, and perhaps place? And from where do you have the information that he emigrated in 1892? Does the (all) census say that? It can be quite hopeless to look up someone in the Swedish census unless we know a little more, in 1890 he may have lived away from parents, so they'd not be found in the same household, in 1880, yes there is a chance but to search for him requires a perfect spelling of his name, and parents name and that is very time consuming. One or both parents could also have passed away by then so I suggest you tell us more about him so that we can first verify who he is in the US, and then start our search for him in the emigrant records (you may be aware that not 100 % of the emigrants are available on the various cd's)and hopefully go back to Sweden and the church records. Looking forward to more information. :-)

Hello Gary,
Is it possible that John E Person was actually born in Burnett County on January 8, 1874? While looking through the records for Burnett County,  Wisconsin I found 2 records from John E Person a Birth and Marriage (Md. January 29, 1905).

He's listed in 1900 census - if that's him, as being born in Sweden in Feb 1872. All other census that I find says he's born in Sweden in either 1869 or 1870 so I think we have to believe in that.

Thanks Susan and Shawn for your insights, especially on the 1880 census searching.  My sources are family history, the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses for sure, WI 1905 census, the January 29, 1905 marriage record, land records, a directory, tombstone.  He primarily lived in the town of Blaine, Burnett Co, WI.  That 1900 census I believe is probably him.   The research has revealed the 1892 / 1895 emigration and parents names. So more digging is required.  Thanks again.

I'm sure it's possible to locate him via the 1880 Census but since Johan Persson is quite a common name it might be a bit time consuming.
One way of speeding up the search would be if you know the name of brothers/sisters that he might have had.
An obituary (especially in a Swedish-American newspaper) could give you the name of his hometown in Sweden.
You could also investigate other Swedes who possibly arrived to the same destination in the US at the same time. Maybe several persons emigrated from the same parish.
You should also check if he was a member of a local Swedish parish in his town in Wisconsin - the Swedish Lutheran parishes normaly kept very detailed Swedish style household rolls.
He might also have taken the boat from Norway. Have a look on this site:

We do not know what the E stands for.  It appears on the marriage record very clearly, unambiguously, and less so in a census record, but has not been spelled out.  I hypothesize Erik.  Thanks for your interest.
