This man is my great-grandfather.  I do not know what part of his life he spent in Gillberga, but that's where his wife said he was from.  He went by Charley Nelson in the US and ended up as a rancher in Bancroft, Idaho.  He married Henrietta Wilhelmina Hager in Chicago in July of 1893. She was from Sater, Kopparberg but lived in Stockholm prior to her emigration in 1893 to Chicago.  They had one child, my grandfather, Edwin Carl Nelson, born 1864 in Chicago.

It looked like the family have had some problems. Several of the children has been taken care of.

Regarding Henrietta I also found her at the census for Värmland.

Lena,
Thank you for your answer.  I apologize for taking so long to get back to you.  Silly me - I forgot the site where I left the message.

I am very interested that you found Henrietta in Varmland.  I have wondered if they knew each other before they were married since they married so soon after she arrived in the US.  I hope this is the big break I have been searching for.

I'm going to check out that census now and I'll be in touch again!

Thank you so much!
Carol

I did find a Karl Nilsson, born 1865, on the 1890 census in Varmland at Karlstad.  It says he was born at Karlstads stad.  I need to check into whether or not he is the right one.  Mine was born October 16, 1865.
