Hello Nancy,

At the Emigranten CD I found one Sofia Mattsson who was 18 years old when she went to Brooklyn 27.9.1872. She was from Slöta in Västra Götaland. The age is not matching exactly but maybe.....
She went from Göteborg.

At the same time there was four other person leaving from Slöta to USA, but they went to Duluth and St Joseph.

best regards
Lena

Hello Lena,

Thank you for your help.  I don't think we have located my great grandmother however. She is believed to have emigrated at or about the same time as her future husband, Lars Otto Carlsson (Karlsson).  He is said to have emigrated from Göteborg around 1881.  He was born in Gärdhem, Älvsborgs län. His last known residence before emigrating was Åsaka.

They were part of a larger group who went to Iron Mountain,Michigan for several years before settling in Minnesota with the Hobart Colony.

Best regards,

Nancy

I went to Swenson today and checked 2 church microfilms for Iron Mountain, MI.
I checked 1st Covenant and 1st Lutheran [includes Saron Lutheran]- the only listings at Swenson.
I looked for Sofia Matsson or similar spelling and for Lars Carlsson but i did not find anybody by those names.  I checked the marriage records and did not find them there either but the list began in 1895 so one year after the date of marriage so they might have gotten married in 1st Lutheran or Saron Lutheran.

Hello Ted, Judy, and Chuck,

Thank you for all the information. Since I first posted this request in  2002, I have found a good deal of information about Sofia.  She is, as you discovered, the daughter of Mattias Andreasson (b. January 16, 1825, Upphärad) and Anna Brita Olofsdotter (b. November 29, 1823, Rommele). I made contact with a third cousin in Stockholm through my postings on Anbytarforum. We have been able to confirm correspondence between his ggf in Sweden and my great grandparents in Minnesota.

Chuck, my great grandmother Sofia and Great grandfather Lars Otto Karlsson (aka Lars Otto Nyquist) were married in Iron Mountain, Michigan on July 28, 1884.  I was able to get a transcript of the mariage certificate from the State of Michigan.  It did not give their birthplace or parentage.  The only addition information I received was the name of the cergyman, Pastor C. Grant.  I am curious about their life in Iron Mountain--where they lived, worked, etc.  Do you think Swenson's church records would be a good resource now that I have the marriage date?

Best regards,

Nancy

Hello Nancy,
Have you tried the Dickinson County Library, in Iron Mountain, Michigan. They have copies of the Iron Mountain News on Microfilm.
I live in Kingsford, Michigan a twin city of Iron Mountain.

Clyde,

Thanks for the idea.  I do plan to be in Michigan this summer and will try to make time to stop at the library.

Is Menominee county nearby? A family member suggested my great grandparents were married in that county.

Best  regards,

Nancy

Hej Nancy,
Yes Menominee county is nearby. The city of Menominee is about 70 miles South of us here at Iron Mountain-Kingsford. Menominee is the twin city of Marinette, Wisconsin.
Dickinson County was formed in 1891. Before that most of the Dickinson County was part of Menominee County.
The cities of Iron Mountain, Kingsford, and Norway, Michigan were part of Menominee County prior to 1891.
If I can be of any further help, please ask.
Best Regards,
Clyde

Hi Clyde,

Thanks for the clarification.  Now it all fits--when my grandparents married in 1884, Iron Mountain was part of Menominee County. Right?  I looked at the transcript of their marriage license again, and it does say Iron Mountain, Menominee County.

Best regards,

Nancy
