I am trying to establish if a Carl Johan Nilsson, age 21(Born Oct.1,1848) emigrated to the USA from Gothenburg about June 16, 1870.

I have a New York landing date of July 2,1870 so think he must have left about 2 weeks before this. .

I have information about a Charles Landeen, born in Sweden in 1848 who left Gothenburg and landed in New York,N.Y. July 2, 1870.I am trying to find out if this Charles was Carl Johan Nilsson who changed his name in the USA..

Could this be your emigrant?  The age is off by 4 or 5 years, and the departure seems a little early for your landing date.  But you never know.. maybe he tarried in England for a while or perhaps he took a sailing vessel which took longer to cross?

I havd found one CARL JOHAN NILSSON, born 1848 Oct.1st. in Ukna parish, who on Nov.17. 1885 left Västergården, Rullerum in Ringarum parish (Östergötland) for the US. He was 37 years old and not married.

The emigration date is way off, but the name and birth date is exactly correct. What do you think?
Could he have emigrated twice?

Carl Joh Nilsson left Sweden for Chicago over the port of Copenhagen 1870-06-16
Age is not ok because he says to be 26 but that can be wrong.
That is no parish named in Sweden.

Another Johan Nilsson age 22 left Umeå parish 1870-06-18 for Chicago over the port Gothenburg

Steve, Ted and Jan-Erik: Thank you for your help.

Ted you have the correct Carl Johan. He was my grandfather's brother. Carl Johan's father's bouppteckning, 1880 said that both Carl Johan and my grandfather were in America

Pernilla Bollman checked the Rullerum church records for me and said that for some reason Carl Johan was kept on the household record till 1885 when it said utstruken even though it also recorded the following:
 - he was in Rullerum Dec. 1869. (I know he lived with a relative at that time.)
-household record 1861-1871 had a note about him which said that he had moved to America.
- household record 1872-1876 next to his name was Flyttat till America utan besked.
 - every household record till 1885 said he had moved to America.
I have concluded that he probably left for America 1870-1871. His relatives left Rullerum for Gryt parish in 1872.

I have Nilsson relatives from that area also and
I was wondering if they may be connected.
I have a Inga Stina Persotter born 12-08-1821 and
her father was Petter Nilsson born 22-01-1822
Petter Nilsson's father was Nils Perssonborn 24-
09-1742 and his father was a petter.

Maxine: I have checked my records and I have not found an Inga Stina Pettersdotter with a father Peter Nilsson. My families originated from Ukna and Hannäs parishes. Carl Johan Nilsson went to live with relatives named Andersson in Rullerum after his father died in Ukna parish.
Is Peter Nilsson's birth date a mistake?
Good luck finding Inga Stina.

Ishbel,
Yes, I got Peter Nilsson,s birth date wrong.
It should be Peter Nilsson born 22-01-1778 and he died 01-06-1822
Peter Nilsson's daughter (Inga Stina Persdotter) was born 12-06-1821.  She was 1yr old when her father died.
Here are Inga Stina's other sisters--
Lena Cajsa Persdotter
Anna Lena Persdotter
Maja Brita Perdotter.
Thank you for noticing this mistake.

Correction for Ishbel's message Jan.12.2005 message:
Carl Johan did not go to live with Anderssons after his father died in Ukna 1879. Carl was in USA at that time.
