Hi Folks...

My name is Kent Harding and I'm researching the Cronholm name, (and Lundin, but thats later)

Here are some 'Tales' from my Aunt Marie...Maiden Name = Cronholm

1-Cronholm means Crown Island

2-One of our Swedish ancestors (dont know who)was Knighted (dont know the Order) by some Swedish King (dont know which one) for long 'personal'/(maybe 'government') service

3-Crown Island was given to this ancestor as part of the Knighthood

4-the name Cronholm has been used ever since

Questions:

1 -Does Cronholm mean Crown Island

1a-Does Crown Island still exist

1b-If so, where is it

2 -What sort of Records would show the Knight Orders that were in existance during the reign of any particular Swedish king

2a-What sort of Records would show the names of the Knights of these various Orders

3 -What sort of Records would show the 'entitlements' given to that Knight

4 -How old is the Cronholm name in Swedish history

Thats enough for now

Thank you in advance to all who reply...

Hej Kent,
the online phonebook Eniro.se lists 436 people with name Cronholm or Kronholm. Since not everyone has an own personal telephone, there might be a thousand people or more with this name in Sweden today.
The name does mean Crown Island - even if a holme is a very small island. I found 14 places, 4 in Gävleborgs län, 2 each at Gotland and Kronoberg, the others spread all over Sweden.
I could not find this name under any variation at Riddarhuset (house of Nobility) http://www.riddarhuset.se/jsp/index.jsp?id=1148.
Hälsningar,
Britt

The Swedish orders of the Sword, the North Star and Vasa were given for services rendered ie if you had been a university professor for a given number of years you would receive the black band of the North Star. This did NOT make you a nobleman.

Google turned up 22 900 hits for the name Cronholm so maybe your auntie, if alive, can come up with more details?

On receiving an order you would NOT receive a small island to go with it.

Elgenstierna has published  pedigrees for Swedish noble familes. I don´t have it to hand but someone else on Anbytarforum will no doubt help .

Hello Kent,

Regarding your name questions: Cronholm is one of many, many Swedish surnames that consists of two words, in this case krona and holme with the meaning that you've given. Other variations are: Kronkvist, Kronlund, Holmgren, Sjöholm. You could also have the shorter surnames Krona, Holm. Many places have similar names such as Stockholm, Landskrona but I've never heard of a place called Kronholm.

Often the two words of a compound name have some connection with nature, therefore crown could refer to the crown of a tree as well as being a royal symbol.

Exacly when these surnames appeared I don't know but noble families were the first to take up the practise although they in the beginning sometimes used their patronymicons too. The meaning of the names was illustrated on the coats of arms. During the 19th century it had become very common for ordinary people to loose a patronymicon and take on a name like Cronholm. At this time children began to inherit their father's surname.

Some men gained a new name when they served as soldiers. This name could sometimes be linked to the village they came from, which in turn could be derived from the nature around it. Before the 19th century a soldier's name was personal and normally not inherited by the children.

Hi Folks...

---------------
Britt Borjesson: I'm glad that Cronholm is not the American equivilent of Smith

Thank you for confirming Crown Island. I tried useing an on-line Swedish Gazetteer, but no sucess finding anything about Crown Island. I will try again.

I wasn't expecting to be associated with Nobility but thanks for lookingand responding...

---------------
Christina Backman: Thank you for the Order names.
I will do a Google on them

Am I to imply that any other Swedish Orders would be connected with Nobility???

Google is awesome and sadly, Aunt Marie is no longer with us...

Could King (unknown) have granted the Island property in a separate action???

It would be nice to hear from someone concerning the Elgenstierna...

Thanks for your post

--------------------
Christina Skagerborg: Thank you for the education on two-name names.

So maybe a variation of Cronholm could have been Kronaholme at some time in the past???

Whats a Patronymicon???

Were early Coats of Arms reserved for the Royal Families, Dukes, Earls, Barons, and the like???

I have heard that a Coat of Arms can be made from any name...

I dont know of any Military(Army/Navy) Cronholms, but of course that doesn't mean there weren't any

Thanks for your help...

--------------------
Monica Hammarstrom: The earliest Cronholm I know about is...

Mickael Ludvig Otto(Otis?) Cronholm

He died around 1888???

He married Paulina Amalia Lundin, 1-Nov-1880 in Overkalix, Norrbotten, Sweden

She was born 8-Oct-1857

2 sons: Frederick Norman
        Ture(Thure), born 1-Nov-1881, Overkalix

Thure was my GrandFather...

The Disbyt database, http://disbyt.abc.se came up with Bror Nils Otto Cronholm, born 1881 in Overkalix, Norrbottens lan

Is Bror like 'brother'???

Any connections would be wonderful and most welcome...

Thank you for asking

-----------------
Peter Wernqvist: I'm sorry, I couldn't find the Anbytar forum for Swedish Atlecs (Idrottsman) on this Website...

I am a Newbie, so I dont know all the ropes...

Would you mind telling me how to get there???

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

-----------------

Thanks to all who responded...

This is an impressive site for Swedish Genealogical information...

Bye for now, Kent Harding

Hello Kent,

The form Kronaholme does not exist due to the word formation roles of Swedish componund words. Words ending with -a normally looses the -a in a compound word, hence blomma (flower) but the surname Blomgren.

A patrionymicon is the father's name ending with -son or -dotter (-daughter). Let us say Peter Nilsson has a son Anders. The son will be called Anders Peterson stating that he is the son of Peter. If Peter has a daughter Maria she will be called Maria Petersdotter. This was earlier the normal name giving practice which is today abandoned for the inherited surnames.

When you look for older ancestors a patronymicon is the norm but occasionally a soldier gets a different name. The closer you get to the end of the 19th century the more common it is to loose the patronymicon for another name, or the children inherit their father's patronymicon. Today there are a lot of Peterssons that don't have a father called Peter. And since a wife often takes on her husband's name there are not many girls called Petersdotter etc left.

From the beginning coats of arms were reserved for the nobility. Today any family can design their own coat of arms, but it doesn't make them noble. Even if you take on a new name (people still do) in stead of Petersson or Johansson etc you can't choose a noble name without blood ties.

Exacly why your ancestor Cronholm had the name he had I can't answer. I'm just referring to name giving practice in general.

Christina

No Swedish order conferred nobility on the recipient.

No Cronholms in Elgenstierna so no noble Cronholms in Sweden.

Several Cronholms from southern Sweden have formed their surname from the city of Landscrona.

I can?t find Mikael Otto Ludvig in the Medical Directories that I have to hand. Perhaps someone else can help.

As MLOC was born in Ystad he probably studied at the University of Lund. Again, I have no material but doubtless someone else can help.

Sorry about Aunt Marie.

Happy hunting

This might be a interesting curiousity:

The company was once a huge paint factory in Stockholm known as Alcro. But Beckers bought it and nowadays it's a part of that company.

It doesn't have any relationship with your family, as far as I know...
