Many, many thanks, John! Maybe I will try a posting for Hällefors parish, and see if anyone who follows those posts knows of any Storfelt farms that might have been operating in Hällefors or nearby Värmland at an earlier date than I found that family there. Dianne

Thanks very much for replying. Do you have any idea why Storfelt might appear to be a third name on Brita's record?

3
While researching the family of Nils Jonasson, f. 1691, Hällefors, Örebro, I found a record of a Brita, who seems to have been Nils' sister, f. 1688. However, while the father's name appears only as Jonas Jonsson on Nils' record, the word “Storfelt” appears immediately after the Jonsson on Brita's record. Can anyone tell me what the “Storfelt” might indicate? I found 1 or more Storfelt families in Varmland at a much later date, and a Storfelt rote in Stellefteå, but I can find no connection between Jonas and the Varmland Storfelts, and Stellefteå is far to the north of Hällefors. An attempt at translating Storfelt gave the result “large fault,” which did not seem to be helpful. Any help that anyone can give me would be highly appreciated. Dianne Catalano

That is certainly possible, Bo. If he took on the surname Storfelt, I would have thought that it would have also shown up on the later of the 2 birth records, but maybe the cleric who recorded the later baptism just omitted it. Dianne

Thank you very, very much, Bo! Storfelt (by which you have ??)was the name listed after Jonsson by the researchers who listed Brita's birth record on DISBYT, so that person read that name the same way that you did. (Of course that researcher did not provide any translation other than Brita's name and her father's name). At this point I do not know the reason for the addition of Storfelt on Brita's record. Possibilities are a farm name (there were Storfelts in nearby Värmland - but the ones I found were there at a much later date), or a soldier name later dropped (there was a Storfelt rote to the north in Skellefteå).

I seek help with reading two parish records that I found in DISBYT and slakdata. Some kind persons sent me copies of both, but I can not read them. The first is the baptismal record of Nils Jonasson b. 1691, Hällefors, Örebro. The Serial number given in DISBYT is 6480, the Page Number is 89. Information written at the top of the record that I received: 2240.46.88100 Närke and Värmland: Örebro Hällefors C:1 1676-1693 89/0
The second record is the baptismal record of Brita Jonasdotter, baptized 11/23/1688, Hällefors, Örebro. The Serial number given in DISBYT is 5330 and the page number is 73. The
following is written at the top of that record: 87300 73/0 GID: 2240.46.87300. I appreciate any help that I can get in reading these records. I can send a copy of them if the copy is requeted here, or by e - mailing me at diversity19@comcast.net. Dianne Catalano

Thank you so much for helping. Do you know if there is any way I might get information about the register of students at Strengnes 1700-1730. It is mentioned in an article Fra svensker til dansker, which is about my ancestor. I am wondering if there is any way I could find out what years my ancestor would have been at Strängnäs.

Hi!
I am wondering if anyone has information about education in Strängnäs in the late 1600s-early 1700s. My ancestor, Nils Jonasson Diurberg, has military records showing that he learned to read and write at Strängnäs. (Diurberg was his soldier name. He enlisted in 1709, age 18.) I believe Nils was a peasant, but I know nothing about his parents. He came from Floda parish, Södermanlands, when he enlisted. He was in rote 301, Västra Granhed. The rotefarms were Granhed (1 mantal), Österby (1/4 mant.), and Girtop (1/4 mant.). The possessor of all 3 (1686) was Agn. (likely Agneta) Ribbing, of the noble Ribbing family.
I wish to learn: 1. How a peasant boy would have had a chance to study at Stängnäs. 2. If there were other schools in Strängnäs, besides the Cathedral school. 3. If the students at Strängnäs would have all been boarders (as I wonder if Nils' parents could have lived nearby, such he could have lived at home). 4. If wealthy families ever covered the cost of a peasant's schooling so that the peasant would qualify for the military (and thus provide a needed recruit under the Allotment system).

Does anyone know which parishes in Södermanland have records dating back to the 1690s? I have an ancestor, Nils Jonasson Diurberg (Diurberg was his soldier name)whose military record says he was born in Södermanland in 1691. The record does not give Nils' birth parish, just the parish at the time he enlisted (Floda). The record also shows that Nils was educated in Strängnäs.

In a Hällefors församling record that I was researching in DISBYT, I found the following related to the parish:
          1644  Separated from Grythyttan
          1675  Annexe Assembly
Can anyone tell me what the ”Annexe Assembly” refers to? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Thank you. You have been very helpful. I have searched the internet for a long time, and been unable to find this information anywhere else. It may be in old books, but I don't believe any such books are radily available in the US.

Thank you for replying.
According to military records, there were 3 farms in rote 301: Granhed (1 mantal), Österby (1/4 mantal), and Girtop (1/4 mantal). So, except for Granhed, these were small farms. Would there have been several small groupings or hamlets like this within the parish? Would people have had to travel very far to attend church?

Can anyone tell me about the historic composition of Floda parish, Södermanlands? My ancestor came from that parish when he enlisted in the infantry in 1709. I know the parish lies in Katrineholm, which I  assume was a small town (or maybe a village) when my ancestor enlisted. However, my ancestor was a soldier recruited by a group of rote farms (rote #301), in Västra Granhed. He lived for a time in Skenäs torp. So I am trying to understand if Floda would have incuded both the town of Katrineholm and outlying farms in the country or in populated places. Västra Granhed seems to have been the name of the largest rote farm, but may have also been the name of a place.  I know that the old parish (socken) was an administrative unit, but I still do not have a good picture of what my ancestor's parish might have been like. I have searched for both Floda parish and Katrineholm online, but there is little to be found except for links related to Katrineholm tourism, and other contemporary matters.

« skrivet: 2010-10-06, 02:41 »
My ancestor Nils Jonasson Diurberg (Diurberg = soldier name) studied at Strängnäs before joining the military. A family researcher thinks he is the Nicolaus Forselius listed on pages 22 (Class Secunda, 1706) and 25 (Class Tertia 1707) in the book MATRICULA REGII COLLEGII STRENGNENSIS, 1700-1730, UTGIVEN AV HARALD PETERSEN, ÅRSREDOGÖRELSE, 1948-1949. Would Nils' inclusion in the list of students in the above book indicate that he studied at the Cathedral school, or would the Thomas Gymnasium established in 1626 also have been a possibility? Were Latin names used only at Cathedral schools, or at others as well? Thank you in advance for any help that anyone can give me.

Thank you very much, Katrin! That was a very quick reply! Now I should be able to use the words properly in a story that I am writing about my ancestor. Your help is very much appreciated!

I have seen the following 2 words used in a very similar manner: Husförhörs and Husförhörslängderna. Could someone please tell me what the difference in these 2 words is? Thank you very much in advance. Dianne Catalano

General questions / Resource Book
« skrivet: 2014-03-05, 15:51 »
Does anyone know of a way to obtain a copy of the book Matricula Regii Collegii Strengnensis?  As far as I can tell, the book was compiled, or edited, by Harald Petersson, and published in 1947. I have an ancestor who was a student at Strängnäs in 1706 - 1707, and he is reportedly listed in that book.
I live in the US, and I have not been able to find the book here. It is listed with our Library of Congress, but I cannot access it there.
I believe that there are 2 publications with the above title. One, I think, is a fairly large book, and the other is more like a pamphlet (which is what I seek). I saw the small book once when I visited DK, and was able to write down some information about it.  Now I would like to reference it in a story about my ancestor (not to be sold or published), and I want to be sure that I have accurate information. Thank you in advance for any attention to this question. Dianne Catalano

General questions / Determining Birthplaces
« skrivet: 2014-03-28, 18:59 »
Thanks very much for replying, Heikki! All I have found in the church records of Närke-Varmland is the 1691 birth, in Hällefors. The person I am researching seems to have been in school in Strängnäs by 1702, when he would have been about 11. So, I am not sure where he would have been confirmed, but I did not find his confirmation in Hällefors. As far as I know, there are no moving rolls, censuses, or household exam. rolls for Hällefors that far back. I did view the original 1710 general muster roll when ArkivDigital had its free weekend, but I saw nothing there about birthplace - just notes about the soldier's service. Nils must have had a soldier contract when he enlisted (Dec. 1709), but the Central Soldiers' Register does not have that. I would be happy to find Nils' place of birth by province only, as that would help to tie the soldier to the student (or to rule out a connection). I will check the Närke-Varmland church records again. Unfortunately, since I did not find the father's death there, the family may have made an unrecorded move.

General questions / Determining Birthplaces
« skrivet: 2014-03-28, 02:42 »
Does anyone know if birthplaces are very often entered in soldier records at the War Archives? I have an ancestor, Nils Jonasson Diurberg, whose soldier records (from the Central Soldiers Register) say he was born 1691, which is consistent with his age at death.  Per that same source, Nils came from Floda parish, Södermanland, when he enlisted. The Register says they do not have birthplaces, but that the War Archives might. Before joining the army, Nils studied at Strängnäs, where he was given a Latinized name. The student there most likely to be Nils came from Nericia (Latin for Närke). In Närke-Varmland records, I found a Jonas Jonson who had a son Nils, born 1691. I am trying to determine if that child could have been my ancestor, but with no birthplace on the soldier records that I have, I can neither make the connection, nor rule it out.  I am looking for any suggestions as to where I might search for my soldier’s birthplace. I live in the US, and am thus limited to online resources, volunteer look-ups, or hiring a professional.

Looking for any available information on a Nils Jonasson born 10-02-1691 in Hällofors parish, Örebro County. He was the son of Jonas Jonson (or perhaps Jonsson). I believe that the information may have come from DYSBYT. I have an ancestor, Nils Jonasson Duirberg (Duirberg soldier was his name) who was born in 1691, and was the flow parish while in the military. I am wondering if there is any possibility that it could be the same Nils Jonasson.

Seek birthplace and parents of Swedish soldier Nils Jonasson Diurberg (Diurberg was his soldier name). I have the following information, which I hope is correct:
Birth: 1691
Birth parish: Unknown. From Floda parish, Södermanland, on enlistment 12/17/1709, age 18.
Education: Learned to read and write at Strängnäs, dates uncertain. Reportedly did not graduate.
Military: Initial soldier #: 301. Rote: Västra Granhed. Soldattorp: Skenäs. Was wounded in the Battle of Helsingborg; and then deemed incapable of being a soldier. Was reassigned and served in a capacity somewhat like today's military police. Captured by the Danes at Tønning 1713.
Rote Farms: Västra Granhed, Girtop (or Hirtop)and Osterby. The possessor was Agnetta Ribbing at one time, but she was deceased by the time Nils was recruited.
Other: Remained in Denmark (Kvols) after his release in 1715. Married first Karen Christensdatter, and later Kirstine Knudsdatter. Became a sergeant in the Danish service.
Death: 4/15/1742, in Denmark
Most of the above information is from records provided by The Central Soldiers Register, http://soldat.dis.se/, and Evert Wahlberg's archive http://soldatregister.p10.se/torpakt.asp?ID=301. Information about Nils' education was received from a distant relative in Denmark. I believe the original source was the register of students at Strengnes 1700-1730.
