Hello

I am having trouble finding information on my husband's Great grandfather, the information I have though I am not sure how correct is:

Emanuel Anderson born 4 Sep 1859 in Vanersborg, Vastra Gotaland, Sweden (Birth Parish: Hogdal?)
Emanuel's parents Anders Olson (born about 1829) and Kaissa Daniel.

Emanuel possibly 'jumped ship' and was in New Zealand about 1879?? He married in 1908 and died in 1918.

Thank you, I appreciate your help
Kim

The Emanuel born in Hogdal 4 Sept 1859 is the son of Anders Korneliusson and Karolina Andersdotter, they are crofters in Busedalen, Hogdal. He is still in Hogdal in 1900.

This emigrant Emanuel Anderson was not born on the given date, 1859 Sep. 4, in either Vänersborg, Vassända, Naglum or Väne-Ryr, according to the birth records of these parishes, all close to Vänersborg.

Hello

Thank you for your replies and trying to help.

According to the book The Swedes in New Zealand by Sten Aminoff
Emanuel Anderson was born 1860 in Vänersborg, Älvsborgs län, Sweden, his parents Anders Olsson and Kaisa Daniel. Emanuel arrived in NZ in 1879.

I will try and get this book but don't think there was any other information.

I think the birth date of 4 Sept 1859 has been mentioned in the family and someone has decided this is the right man ( though now we know is not) as the closest to his year of birth so far found and also from Vanesborg. So its back to searching just when I thought finally after a long time I have some details.

Both his marriage and death certificate suggest he was born about 1859, in Vanesborg Sweden.
Both of these certificates say his father was Anders Olsen (though could be Olson) and that his father was a farmer, his mother Kaissa Daniel.
His death certificate at 1918 suggests he had been in New Zealand 25 years making that 1893 ( he married 1908) so a different date in the book of arriving 1879, but both dates to consider.

I hope you can help with the sources you use to search.

Again so grateful

Regards
Kim

Kim, I have Mr. Aminoff's book (I even knew him), but he is giving the information you already have.

If he was a sailor, he should have been listed in one of the the Seamen's registries (Sjömanshus), but only a few of them have been digitized. There were some 58 of them all around Sweden.

Hopefully someone else has a bright idea.

Looking in the 1880 Swedish Population index (Sveriges Befolkning 1880) for one KAJSA DANIELSDOTTER in the county of Älvsborg, I find the following family residing at Muggeryd, Grinstad parish, that looks too good to pass by:

ERIK OLSSON *1838 Aug.4. Grinstad
wife/ KAJSA DANIELSDOTTER *1836
son/ EMANUEL  *1860 Dec.14. Grinstad  (to Amerika 1882 and 1884)
dau/ STINA MAJA *1863 Sep.26. Grinstad
son/ KARL WILHELM *1867 April.11. Grinstad (to North Amerika 1885)
dau/ EMMA *1870 Sep.3. Grinstad
son/ JOHAN BERNHARD *1874 April.18. Grinstad

There is no mentioning of Emanuel being a sailor or having left home earlier than 1882, but Grinstad is reasonably close to Vänersborg, and this Emanuel could of course have moved on from the US to New Zealand eventually.

Again thank you for the replies - Bo, Elisabeth, Ted, Chris. This is certainly a mystery but good we are finding possibilities to look into.
Chris do you have an image of the Emanuel you mention?
I have also had this information given to me as a possibility.
A family living in Köhlviken norra, Nössemark parish situated about 1½ hours drive by car from Vänersborg.
Father: Anders Olsson (1814-1870), farmer
Mother: Kajsa Danielsdotter (1817-1865)
Several children, including a son named Emanuel DoB May 25th, 1853 (maybe is lied about his age)he disappears on August 3rd, 1880 when he leaves Nössemark parish for Sandefjord, Norway.

Any information or ideas are welcome.
Reading my past message I see some of my wording get changed not sure why.
Regards Kim
