Hello,

I'm from Germany and I have some swedish ancestors. I'm trying to find out some more information on them.

This is what I know:

Claus John Johnson
    * Born on 5 March 1850 - Schweden
    * Died on 24 March 1914 - Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

His wife is:

Hanna Pauline Anderson
    * Born on 1 June 1858 - Schweden
    * Died on 3 November 1933 - Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

Their children are:
    * Carl ca 1885
    * Erik ca 1887
    * Ellen E. ca 1889
    * Aron ca 1892
    * Agda M. ca 1894
    * Esther Ingeborg 1897-1966
    * Gustave A. 1900-1975

His parents:
    * Johannas Swenson
    * Mina ?

Her parents:
    * Lars Anderson
    * ? ?

I know that they emigrated from Sweden to the USA in 1890 with the ship SS Scythia from Liverpool to Boston. They arrived on 16 June 1890. They travelled with the three kids Carl, Erik and Ellen. In the passenger list his name is written Clas.
In the US they lived in Manchester from their arrival to their deads.
Her name is sometimes given as Larsson. Perhaps because her fathers name was Lars?

My sources are:
- their death certificates
- the passenger list of the SS Scythia
- Esther's original application for her Social Security Number, dated August 26, 1938
- Memories of some family members

I have the information, that they could have a relative in Sweden, Sigrid Hakansen in Ulricehamn.

My questions are:
- how can I find out the city in Sweden where they originally came from?
- I would love to have information on their parents and brothers and sisters.
- what kind of records could I get?
-how could I find out more about Sigrid Hakansan?

I'm very gratefull for every little piece of information. I don't speak swedish, but german and english.

Thanks a lot,
Michelle Engel

I found the family leaving from Göteborg 30th of May 1890.

They came from the parish Timmele in Älvsborgs county and I think it's not so far from Ulricehamn.

Hi Michelle,

Read about the Swedish parish records on the SweGGate website.

http://www.sweggate.com

Follow this pathway.

Themes --> Church Records

Also read the numerous interesting articles on the Swedish Roots site to further deepen your understanding of genealogical records available in Sweden.

http://www.genealogi.se/roots/

Have fun!

Lena: Thank you. Where can I find the information in the Internet to read it myself? Are the parish records available online? Where did you find it?

Judy: Thank you too. I tried http://www.sweggate.com  and followed the path. Then I tried Västergötland, but then I can't click on Ulricehamn, it's not linked. Are these the right links?
I found, that Timmele is transcribed, but on this page http://www.genealogi.se/links2.htm I can't click on Timmele... Connection refused. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Michelle

Hello Lena,

do you think I could try to write to the town or the church parish? To get more information?
What kind of information is on your cd? Are the dates right I have?

I think I should learn some swedish to understand the websites ;-) Sometimes hard...

Hi Michelle,

There are some glossaries on the SweGGate website.

http://www.sweggate.com

Click on Dictionary on the home page and you will find a glossary page with links to several more glossary pages.

I didn't send you to the Regions section on SweGGate but apparently you tried it. The webmaster, Dr. Haeffner, is a very busy man and hasn't finished the website yet. If there is no link for Regions --> Västergötland --> Ulricehamn, that means he hasn't worked on that page yet. I don't know where you were looking to find Timmele and a link that didn't work, but I see from the online Swedish National Atlas site that Timmele is in Ulricehamn.

Lots of information is still unavailable online. I have used microfilmed parish records to find information.I have a LOT of information and I haven't had to write to Sweden yet.

I wasn't sending you to the actual parish records. I tried to help you understand what the records consisted of. I thought that was what you asked earlier.(what kind of records could I get?)

Good luck!

Judy

Lena: Thank you a lot, you helped me so much. You confirmed the information I had and gave me hints where to continue my search. I think their name in Sweden was Johansson, this will be a great help, when searching in Sweden or swedish documents.
I think, Maria Svenson could be Claus' mother, because his fathers name is recorded as Johannas Swenson (I'm sure, this is not the correct swedish spelling).
I will continue my search and try to get information from Timmele.

Judy: I was understanding, what you told me, I read the pages you recommended. It was very helpful. After that I tried to get the original information.
Unfortunately I don't have the possibility to go to Sweden to look into the records or the microfilms. So I'm trying to find as much as I can online or over telephone, mail, etc. I just started searching for the swedish information - it will take me a lot more time - I'm looking forward to it :-)

Thank you both,
Michelle

Hi Michelle,

You don't have to go to Sweden to see the records. I have several generations of records already and I haven't been to Sweden yet.Most people do a lot of research in the microfilmed records before they go to Sweden, and the records are available world-wide. You can find some in Germany. The Mormon church has microfilmed copies of many of those records and you can either go to the huge Family History Library in Salt Lake City or (more likely) use one of their Family History Centers to order and (when the records come in) research those records.

This shows locations of Family History Centers.I see a few of them in Germany.
